New show. New songs. Rare format. Extra mates.
It’s been almost 9 months since Mathas & his mates last took the stage to deliver their signature set of lucid, stripped-back adaptations of songs from Mathas’ back catalogue.

Featuring Michelle Smith on harp, Jerome Turle on drums and Phil Waldron on double bass, this band creates a melodic, brooding soundscape to accompany the density of Mathas’s lyrics. It also lays them bare like no other format.
With a mixture of unheard new songs, mainstays from his 2015 release Armwrestling Atlas and a few old tunes fished out from the depths of his 2009 debut, 10lb Hairless Sasquatch, this show is a rare presentation that is not to be missed!

Mathas has clever mates.
Michelle Smith - HARP
Some time ago in 2012, jazz-harpist Michelle Smith began releasing videos on youtube of her own brand of ‘harp-hop’, inspired little jams where she picks a classic hip hop tune and adds her own live harp parts. To anyone that has seen these videos, they really highlighted the versatility of a traditionally classical instrument in a modern context and Michelle’s unfathomable skill level. She’s really a badass harpist, with her own unique edge. When she began working with Mathas on acoustic versions of his music, she created vibrant, brooding interpretations that replaced all other elements of the original songs entirely.. and she did it in about 48 hours.

Jerome Turle - DRUMS
Before Phil joined the band, Mathas + Mates was a three piece assembled for a one off gig where the focus centred around local acts performing their songs un-amplified and acoustic. Jerome’s feel-driven and delicate playing became the rhythmic backbone to Michelle’s interpretations and the show made for a pretty remarkable synergy when performed live in the St George’s Dining Hall at UWA. Jerome has played in a slew of excellent local bands including psych-dub wizards The Weapon is Sound and the now defunct but locally iconic Mile End.

Phil Waldron - DOUBLE BASS
Phil hopped on board with the band last year and fit in like family. He's an outstanding double bass player who doesn’t shy away from throwing a few effects down on his epic instrument. He’s played with WASO, WA Philharmonic Orchestra, Perth Symphony Orchestra and various local jazz incarnations, as well as in accompaniment for Joni & The Moon and an outstanding persian influenced gypsy band by the name of Daramad.

This is an 18+ event.
